I have encountered the same debate. and I commend you on your research and you are correct in your findings. However, there is one consideration that I ask you to adopt...

...that they are both correct.

As you have aptly poitned out, kenpo and kempo as it were in the romanized interpretations of the Japanese language share a similiar meaning as the Chinese pronounciation of Ch'uan-fa/Quan Fa.

Ken does mean fist and Po does mean law, etc. But in Japanese grammer, when the 'n' sound runs up against the 'p' the 'n' tends to flatten out to an 'm' sound to make the word smoother. There is also th fact the the Japanese language is designed to minimize facial movement (as large movements of the mouth are as seen as distatsteful) and this smoothing out of the achieves this.

This is the explanation given to me both by my sensei in iaido and my friend who is a Japanese language teacher and has lived in Japan for the past 10 years.

This blending of sounds in common in the Japanese language like in the word Tsuki (punch) which sounds like 'zzuki' when spoken. the T is interuppted by the 's' and creates a kind of sliding't/s' combo which to some would sound almost like a dragged out 'z'. Theer are also many examples of this in Chinese and Korean languages.( My wife, who is Korean from Seoul, has explained the Hangul is repleat with similar things.)

Hopefully I have added to this topic constructively.

Cheers!

Hey Zoran. I've been a member for many years now. ( at least 6 or 7). I had written and submitted several articles a long time ago. They were here at one time. Are they still on here somewhere? Can I resubmit them? I would love to continue to contribute stuff.

Thanks!

In my opinion, this was the best fight from a Kenpo guy in the early UFC. Before they added gloves and rules.

Just a note, this is a simple explanation of this subject. It can be much more complicated and I could go in great detail on this. I prefer to keep things simple.
