My name is Ken Lindorff, I had read a message in this forum from one of my former students ( who is now my son in law). It stated the fact that I had jumped around from one association to the other, and had no real explaination of why. So to clear some things up and hopefully open some minds, here it goes. My Kenpo journey began 1988 at the Tony Martinez Kenpo Studio in S.L.C., Ut. I recieved rank up to green belt under Mr. Martinez. After talking with SGM Parker at a seminar he was giving in S.L.C. nov. 1990, just prior to his untimely death on Dec. 15, 1990, I had decided to change over to one of his first generation students, Mr. Jay T. Will and his United Kenpo Karate Association. I recieved my brown belt ranks and my first black form him. After Mr. Will passed away I studied under various instructors in the salt lake area. Mr. Mike Hall, and Mr. Dale Pettit of the now Interamerican Kenpo Karate Assoc., in which I received my second and third degrees. I left that association after Mr. Pettit tied on a tenth degree, from being a seventh degree,(how does that work?) Anyhow, Not being satisfied with the training in Utah I found the newly formed AKKS, Jeff Speakmans assoc. My studio was a member of the AKKS for two years, until at Mr. Speakmans annual camp in vegas 1997 when Mr. Speakman introduced me to Mr. Mohamad Tabatabai who runs the American Kenpo Karate Federation, I became a member of his association. I received my fourth degree from Mohamad in Jan. 1999, and have recently been promoted to fifth. I am still with Mohamad's federation today. The reason for my moving around was to gather information from top Kenpo instructors, and believe me I've worked out with most of the top senior ranked students of SGM Parker. So to finish up this long winded message, I have put all of the information accumulated from all these top Kenpo Masters and have created a Full Contact Kenpo System. G2K Fighting Systems which includes, but not limited to: The small circle connection, Control components, Nerve activation, Choking and Strangulation, Locks and Holds, Passive Kenpo, Ground fighting, Kenpo fighting sticks and Kenpo knife fighting.

Hi G2KLindorff--I was a student of Mr. Pettit's until 1992, I'm trying to remember you but I can't recall you.  Could be, we didn't train during the same period of time.

My mom worked for Tony Sr.   Small world.

I'm curious, you seem to be dis-satisfied with Mr. Pettit putting on a 10th degree belt.  And you mention being dissatisifed with SLC instruction.  You also say that you received your 2nd & 3rd degrees while in Mr. Pettit's association.  These things just make me ask: Because of your dissatisfaction, did you dis-avow the promotions that you received and start over at 1st; or did the AKKS accept your rank?  Just curious, not trying to make an issue of it.

Good luck with your system.

Dear sir,  My Training in Pettits system was during 1995/96, and I do not recall your name.To answer your question, Yes the AKKS accepted my rank, only after learning the system the way Mr. Speakman wanted. I retested my 2nd & 3rd, but did not do it under the AKKS, I waited until I found Master, Mohamad Tabatabai's AKKF and then went forward with my training under Mohamad, Due to the fact that Me and Mr. Speakman don't see eye to eye.  Are you still active in Mr. Pettit's Assoc. ?  I did not in any way mean any disrespect for Dale Pettit, I just have a difficult time with all the political BS that happens in the majority of the Kenpo Associations. Hopefully my new G2K system will be void of any such politics.
Respectfully,
Ken Lindorff

Mr. Lindorff:  I trained with Mr. Pettit from 1985 - 1992.  So you and I were there at different times.  Because I am in Iowa and geographically removed from SLC I'm not active in Mr. Pettit's association.  I'm currently in an association called the "Integrated Kenpo Karate Academies" which was created because there are some "kenpo islands" that don't have the access to big organizations.  We can serve the small, but serious, kenpo practitioners.

I wish you success on your endeavor, especially since your interests do not conflict with mine.  You may find, as the head of your own system/organization, that others within your organization will disagree with some of your decisions and label it "political."  Sometimes our best intentions and efforts get minimized by those who think they could do a better job.

It's good to know that there are people, like you, you continue to train,  learn and progress.

Your Brother In Kenpo,
Ray Albrechtsen

I've always found that many from the Parker system look down on those that start their own system or move away from the original system of Ed Parker. Some act as though it's some sort of affront to them and Ed Parker.

The bottom line is that only time will tell if a system becomes prosperous, a fad, or a flop. I personally feel that instructor's who start their own system should be encouraged with realistic support from their seniors/instructors.

If you feel you can positively contribute to your students and they see value in what you teach, then it is a win/win situation.
It is not an easy endeavor to start your own system but it can be extrememly personally rewarding if done well.  I have developed a system that leverages my personal experiences beyond that which I learned directly from my Instructor.  It is in no way necessarily better, just different.
A 'System' encompasses so much more than just pure technique.  It involves the logical progression of a student to achieve a desired final goal.  Instructors not only vary in their views of technique and skills, but 'how' to teach and bring students from point A to Z.  You can be a highly skilled martial artist but lacking in your teaching ability.  You can be a good Instructor and fall short in effectively progressing a student from a beginner to advance level.
Good luck in your endeavor.

I have been teaching for sixteen years and have not had any problem with effectively advancing a student from beginner to advanced levels, I have several black belts under me and two that are now second degree.  My students have accepted my new system with open arms and highly intense workout sessions, it's been a bit overwhelming at times but mostly very rewarding.

Mr. Lindorff:  Did you know a John Bear (spelling may be off but the pronunciation is right) who claims to be a former student of Mr. Tabatabai?  I met John when I was attending a Tracy school in the Denver area.

No Sir I do not recall anyone by that name, and in checking the "Tabatabai Family Tree", his name is not present. Maybe he was not a Black belt under Mohamad?

Mr. Lindorff,

Are you still located in Utah, and if so do you have an active studio where you instruct/train?
