I read a lot of other Kenpo forums. There is always arguments about history, traditional vs. progressive, who is the true heir, and other hoopla. Even in Parker's American Kenpo, which at one time prided itself of being a progressive system, now argues about staying pure to SGM Parker's teachings and puts down those that have strayed away from the original system. My question really is a simple one. Are any of these things important or relevant for that matter. The various Kenpo systems that came out of Hawaii were always focused on effective self defense. Reason being is Hawaii, at that time, was a rough place. The people that trained there were fighters. Not the kind that walked into a ring and took home a trophy or title, but real fighters that used their training to defend themselves against thugs (of course, some kenpoists where thugs themselves). Have we lost that edge? Are we more concerned with history, principles of motion, or competition rather than keeping our feet firmly planted on the not so pretty world of reality? Are we more concerned with how a technique should be done instead of the practicle applications of a technique? What do you think?

From day one of training, for myself, the most important thing has been going home at night from work. Like Zoran I was involved in the bar scene for nearly 18 years. I created a basement gym that is geared for striking power and some may not agree with this but I have no mirrors. Reason? I have never given a rat's ass on what I look like. ALL fights I have ever been in have been ugly affairs. I fight ugly, my technique looks slopy compared to most and I will get a few WTF's for this, I hate pulling punches. In fact I sink my punches on training partners now and most can not or will not take it. The few partners I have do the same to me and we have an understanding, blood my flow but the anger does not. It is not a commercial program I study. It never will be. It is John McSweeney's and Tom Saviano's system with my own self understanding of what they taught me. Ray Long's input as well as one of my training partners has been huge. We can bang with no ill will ever when mishaps happen, and they do. My lineage is important, but I feel its only important to me. Who should really care where I came from, it only matters what I do on the street, in the bar, on the mat in training, that is my lineage and who ever is across from me will understand my lineage. Big schools are awesome, the friendships made are great, its the small, garage, basement, backyard settings that really impress me, that make me feel like a Kenpo man. Its our history. Those are the things important to me about my Kenpo.
