Mr. Emperado’s first exposure to the martial arts started at the age of 8, in boxing, Escrima, and Judo respectively. At the age of 20, Mr. Emperado began his training in Kenpo under William K.S. Chow. Mr. Emperado was Mr. Chow’s first Black Belt. It was in 1947, while still training under Chow, that Mr. Emperado joined with 4 other black belts to develop a style of their own. These five called themselves the "Black Belt Society". The Members were: - Adriano Emperado - Kenpo
- Peter Choo - Boxing/Tang Soo Do
- Frank Ordonezwas - Jujitsu
- Joe Hlock - Judo
- Clarence Chang - Kung Fu
These men developed a new system that they named, Kajukenbo. It was in 1950, after the other four members went to the Korean War, that Mr. Emperado founded the "Kajukenbo Self Defense Institute of Hawaii". It was located in the Palama Settlement. Since Mr. Emperado did not make enough money as an martial arts instructor. To supplement his income, he worked in the law enforcement and security field. In 1962, Mr. Emperado took the job of harbor police in Hawaii. In 1976, he served as guard to the Governor. Then in 1977, he took the position of head of security for the Kukui Plaza. During this time he spent his spare time teaching, training in other systems, and refining Kajukenbo and his skills.
