What Is A Warrior ? Warrior. What does that mean? What do you think of when you hear it? A barbarian fighter with a loin cloth and long tangled hair, wielding two massive weapons, grunting and frothing at the mouth; A Native American Indian on horseback, skin detailed with war paint, charging fearlessly toward a foolishly under matched opponent; A military soldier bravely firing and maneuvering through enemy territory as comrades continue to fall around him; or, perhaps, a seasoned, lightning-fast, sweat-soaked martial artist hacking his way up the tournament ladder in hopes of attaining that prize trophy. Although these are good examples of a warrior as we understand it, they are not indicative as to what a warrior actually is. They are merely a few manifestations of a warrior in action. Warriorship is not a chosen profession, but a chosen way to live. Of course, there are professions that are well suited for warrior men and women. Soldiers, law enforcement officers and professional boxers and the like are proof positive of that. But, just because you are in the role, it doesn’t guaranty that you possess the spirit to live as a true warrior. The true way of the warrior resides much deeper within. Yes, a warrior must seek excellence in combat skills as part of his or her warriorship. This is the most significant way to acknowledge and pursue one’s true warrior calling. A warrior must seek proper instruction and train diligently in a chosen martial art or combat system. After mastering the basics of his art, the warrior must seek outside interests that will compliment his training and continually add depth to his warrior ways. He must broaden his skills to incorporate any other weapons, techniques and philosophies that he deems necessary to attain excellence in combat effectiveness. Warriors must honor their master’s commitment to train them by first mastering the art and then contributing back to it by continuing to study and train in the system and eventually share it with junior warriors following a similar path. A warrior is a brave soul. However, he does not lack fear. Fear is a human quality that is designed to alert us of danger. When faced with fear, a warrior must recognize, process and channel it into a heightened state of alertness and combat readiness. Focus must be solely on the task at hand. But a true warrior is not merely a highly-developed physical combatant. He is one who has acknowledged his calling. He or she feels compelled to pursue a life of excellence by always striving to better oneself in body, mind and spirit. A warrior strives to attain a higher plane of thought, physical ability and spiritual enlightenment and is driven by a quest to live with loyalty, honor, humility, wisdom, courage, compassion and justice. A true warrior is always ready and willing to take on any challenge that is encountered. A warrior does not seek external gratification but lives with humility and grace. Never does he display physical prowess in an attempt to gain respect, stature or approval from peers. He is focused inward and upward. He truly believes in and chooses to live the warrior’s noble ways that were borne of a long and enriched past when virtues were held in high regard and there were no modern conveniences to provide cushion from the troubles of society. A warrior seeks only to live a life of excellence in all he or she does. The journey toward this goal is the true reward. A warrior is passionate and focused in his pursuit. He is resolved and content in his chosen path. He has awoken and acknowledged his true warrior calling!
