I have been thinking about rank above 1st black. The thought process came up as I watched some vids of Kenpo 3rds, 4ths and 5ths. Also, I have been thinking about this due to some promotions (above black) that are up and have happened in our system in the last year and coming up this year.
Each system and organization has different requirements for rank after 1st black. Most Kenpo systems work thus. After 4th or 5th, rank becomes sort of honorary as most system's curriculum stops there. In many cases, it becomes a "time-in-grade" (means length of active training/teaching). Time-in-grade is also used for ranks above 1st black in some cases.
In my opinion, time-in-grade is a poor tool for deciding what a persons rank should be, or at least, it should only be one of several factors that should considered in any promotion. Time-in-grade should never be considered a factor for rank at and below 1st black.
Anyways, here is my thoughts on what should be considered tools for promotions in order of what is feel is most important;
Skill Level - This is a must. Bottom line is what ever rank a person holds, they need to have the skill that comes with that rank.
Knowledge and Teaching Ability - I group these 2 together as they go hand in hand. Generally speaking, higher levels of black belt are for instructors. If you don't have the knowledge and the ability to impart that knowledge, then you will most likely create sub level students (no matter what you skill level is).
Contribution to the System - What have you given back to the art? Do you teach and promote your system? Are you a positive influence or a negative one?
Time-in-Grade - This can still be a tool for promotions. - Keeping track of a persons time in the arts can keep insturctors from passing up a promotion to someone that deserves it.
- To make sure that a black belt has had sufficent time to mature in their current level.
- Has a student been in a rank too long? Could be a problem that needs to be solved. More usefull at lower ranks.
