James Mitose was a very complex person. The best insight we will ever have into James Mitose is the transcript of his trial in 1973. Unfortunately the transcript is over 3,500 pages. Unless you read this transcript for yourself - you cannot really judge this man. Unfortunately transcripts are not cheap. The courthouse wants $1 a page if they have to photocopy the records for you.

The problem with the Mitose transcript is that Mitose was probably lying during his own trial to make himself sound the way he thought he should to a jury. There are numerous discrepancies with his version of not having any students until Terry Lee, and his known association with the martial arts community (including the instruction of his own son) between his arrival on the mainland and the training of Terry Lee. Much is still left to be explained about this period of time.
