Martial Arts History
In 1977, Mike Vassolo began his training in the martial arts in Goju-Shorei. In 1980 Mr. Vassolo began his training in kenpo, under John McSweeney, one of Ed Parker’s earlier black belts. Mr. Vassolo was one of John McSweeney’s first black belts in Illinois, along with Tom Saviano and Ray Korda.
Mr. Vassolo has taught a wide variety of personal defense courses. Including Senior Citizen Self-Defense at Triton College, Personal Defense at College of DuPage, Women’s Self-Defense at one of Chicago’s largest ad agencies, and Advanced Concepts in Self-Defense Against Weapons at his school, Grey Wolf, in Glen Ellyn, Illinois.
He is the author of numerous articles for the AKKA Newsletter as well as it’s editor since its inception. He is also the author of two books titled,Desperate Measures : Unarmed Self-Defense against Guns, Knives, and Clubs and Kamikaze Fighting : the self defense of last resort.
Mr. Vassolo Today:
Mr. Vassolo holds a 7th degree black belt in kenpo under John McSweeney. He is the executive vice president and founding director of the American Kenpo Karate Association and the editor of the AKKA Newsletter. Currently Mr. Vassolo lives in Illinois and is still training and teaching.
