Richard Planas Bio
Mr. Planas began his training in Kenpo in the late 60’s under Steve Labounty and Tom Kelly. Later, he went to Pasadena, California, to train under Ed Parker. It was Ed Parker who awarded him his 1st black up to 7th black. He received his 7th black in 1985.
Mr. Planas was the Executive Vise President of the I.K.K.A. until Mr. Parker’s death in 1990. Many people believed that Mr. Planas would be the new I.K.K.A. President. But since Mr. Parker never indicated who would take over after his death, the I.K.K.A. was restructured by the Parker family.
Besides his Kenpo training, Mr. Planas has had training in Judo, Tai Chi, Kung Fu, Shotokan, Silat and the Filipino arts (his heritage is half Filipino). He has been featured in Black Belt Magazine, has videos on kenpo, and designs and makes bull whips.
Mr. Planas today:
Richard Planas is very much active in promoting Ed Parker American Kenpo. He has an extensive seminar schedule, touring all over the U.S. and abroad.
